Dear LOHAS Club Members, On behalf of the “Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability” or LOHAS market in the United States, I wish to extend a warm welcome and best wishes to those individuals and companies in Japan dedicated to promoting natural and organic foods, social responsibility in business, sustainable products and the environment. According to a leading market research publication, Nutrition Business Journal, the “Healthy Products, Healthy Planet” market in the United States was valued at $440 billion in 2003, showing an annual growth rate of 6.3 percent and representing 4.2 percent of the U.S. economy. This market includes consumer products such as organic food and fitness equipment; consumer services such as complementary and alternative medicine, socially responsible investing and ecotourism; industrial equipment including water filtration and wind and solar power systems; industrial services including environmental consulting, waste management and recycling; and emerging categories such as green building, sustainable timber and hybrid automobiles. While these industries are diverse, they are united in serving a common consumer group?the “Cultural Creatives,” a term coined by noted sociologist and author Paul H. Ray, Ph.D. Cultural creatives represent up to 68 million adults in the United States, and they support businesses who share their values and concerns regarding natural health, community, the environment and good corporate citizenship. By corporate citizenship?or socially responsible business?I am referring to a corporation that serves not only its stock shareholders, but also its employees, vendors and the community in which it operates, making sure not to pollute, to conserve resources, and to pay a fair wage for labor, products and services. The LOHAS movement is a global movement, and we look forward to more communication and interchange between the LOHAS Club Japan and the LOHAS markets in the United States, Europe and other parts of the world. Individuals and businesses dedicated to furthering natural and organic products and sustainability are truly pioneers forging a new economy?one that respects business, community and the environment. Keep up the good work, LOHAS Club Japan! Yours in health and sustainability, Steven Hoffman President, Compass Natural Marketing Boulder, Colorado, USA www.compassnaturalmarketing.com Co-founder, LOHAS Journal www.lohasjournal.com |
